The Song
Mon amant de Saint-Jean(My Lover from Saint-Jean) is a famous French realist song released in 1942, composed by Émile Carrara with lyrics by Léon Agel. A classic of the musette waltz genre, it tells the story of a young woman seduced and then abandoned by a smooth talker at a village dance.

The Story
Mon amant de Saint-Jean

Originally performed by the singer Lucienne Delyle during the German occupation of World War II, the song enjoyed immense popular success and was one of the great hits of the singer's repertoire.

Its nostalgic notes and melancholic conclusion ("It's in the past, let's not talk about it anymore") secretly echoed the resignation felt by many French people at that time.

The first version of this realistic song was released unsuccessfully in 1937, under the title Les Barbeaux de Saint-Jean, before being covered, again without success, by Jane Chacun in 1942, under the title Mon costaud de Saint-Jean.

Léon Agel then changed the lyrics of his song, giving it its current title, to the theme of a young girl's fleeting love affair with a lover she met at a dance hall in Saint-Jean, set to the tunes of a musette waltz and accordion music by Émile Carrara.

Carrara dedicated his composition to his fiancée Suzanne (later his wife) to commemorate their wedding promise made at the "La Bonne Idée" inn in Saint-Jean-aux-Bois (Oise), in the Compiègne Forest.

In 2002, singer Patrick Bruel revived it on his album Entre deux, introducing it to a whole new generation.
