Plot

New York, the early 1990s. John F. Kennedy Jr. is a young Manhattan prosecutor, living with the hopes and the weight of his famous family.

Carolyn Bessette works in public relations at Calvin Klein. In the series, they meet at a Calvin Klein fundraiser. Their first dinner together ends in a kiss.

But John is not free. The American actress Daryl Hannah, his on-and-off girlfriend, comes back into his life.

John begins work on a new magazine, George. At the same time, his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, is hurt in a riding accident. After a bitter quarrel, Daryl Hannah leaves for Los Angeles.

Then Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis falls ill. She chooses to die at home, with her children beside her. The whole country mourns, and John turns to Carolyn for comfort.

Their first months together are happy. Then an anonymous letter drives them apart. John apologizes, and they come back to each other. A trip together lands them in the tabloids.

They share a dog. On a visit to the Kennedy home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, John's aunt Ethel Kennedy is not impressed by Carolyn.

John proposes in private, and the news leaks. After a public fight in Battery Park, at the tip of Manhattan, Carolyn says yes.

Both families have doubts. The couple plan a small, secret wedding on Cumberland Island, off the coast of Georgia. The ceremony is delayed, but they marry, and leave for their honeymoon.

Married life brings new pressures. Photographers follow Carolyn everywhere, and money is tight at George.

John's cousin Anthony Radziwill learns that his cancer has returned. John clashes with his sister's husband, Edwin Schlossberg. Carolyn shuts herself away from the world.

The death of Diana, Princess of Wales, hunted by photographers in Paris, shakes Carolyn deeply.

A year later, the marriage is in trouble. John moves out for a time, to the Stanhope Hotel.

The couple begin seeing a counselor, and for a while they find their way back to each other.

Then, on a summer evening, John's small plane goes missing near Martha's Vineyard. Carolyn and her sister, Lauren Bessette, are on board with him. Their families must face the truth.

In the end, Carolyn's mother, Ann Messina Freeman, and John's sister, Caroline Kennedy, agree that the ashes will be scattered at sea.

The producers saw a thousand or more actors for John. They wanted the classic masculinity of old Hollywood, and they thought of the American actors George Clooney and Tom Selleck.

Paul Anthony Kelly was a model from Port McNicoll, a small village in Ontario, Canada. He had posed for brands such as Brooks Brothers, but in thirteen years of auditions, he had found almost no acting work.

He nearly gave up. His wife, Syd Widziszewski-Kelly, told him: "No, just stick it out." She asked him to give it one more year. A few weeks later, the call came.

He sent a tape and heard nothing for weeks. Then he was called back to read with Sarah Pidgeon. Afterward, it was she who told him that the part was his.

He and his wife had their first baby in February 2026, the same month the series began.

The creator, Connor Hines, expected Carolyn to be the harder part to cast, because she was "a bit more of an enigma." But Sarah Pidgeon, he said, "very quickly emerged as the frontrunner as soon as we saw her on screen."

Sarah Pidgeon had been nominated for a Tony Award on Broadway, for the play Stereophonic (play, 2023), in 2024. Her audition for Carolyn was a single reading. "I thought, 'Oh, that's not a very good sign,'" she remembered. A few days later, the part was hers.

Only about eighteen seconds of film exist in which the real Carolyn Bessette speaks. To find her, Sarah Pidgeon read biographies, followed accounts devoted to Carolyn's style, and watched the camcorder footage of her wedding again and again.

Grace Gummer, who plays Caroline Kennedy, is the daughter of the American actress Meryl Streep. American actress Constance Zimmer plays Carolyn's mother.

Daryl Hannah is played by American actress and model Dree Hemingway, the great-granddaughter of the American writer Ernest Hemingway.

Production

FX first announced the series in August 2021, as American Love Story. It was planned as a spinoff of Ryan Murphy's American Story franchise of anthology series. Later, the title was shortened to Love Story.

Ryan Murphy produced it with the American producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. The story was inspired by Once Upon a Time (book, 2024), a biography of Carolyn by the American writer Elizabeth Beller.

Filming began in June 2025 in New York City. The crew shot in Tribeca, near the couple's old home on North Moore Street, and in Soho. The village of Bellport, on Long Island, stood in for Cape Cod.

Production designer Alex DiGerlando had few photographs of the couple's private spaces to work from. He built their Tribeca loft as an almost empty white space, with high ceilings and bare furniture.

Ryan Murphy wanted the look of classic Hollywood glamour photography. The loft was lit softly from the side, never from above. "It was its own special effect," Alex DiGerlando said, "and it made the space feel like a jewelry box."

For the Calvin Klein offices, he studied photographs of the company's headquarters on 39th Street. Calvin Klein's own office was recreated closely.

Costume designer Rudy Mance began with the designers Carolyn wore near the end of her life. "So I essentially worked backward," he said.

Sarah Pidgeon wore vintage Prada, Valentino, Yohji Yamamoto and Calvin Klein. For one Tribeca scene, the team found an identical vintage Prada menswear V-neck sweater and a camel pencil skirt.

Her black Prada shoulder bag was replaced by a near-identical one, bought on Etsy from a seller in Ukraine. The only difference was the stitching on the handle.

For her jeans, Rudy Mance studied a grainy camcorder video. His team found a pair of vintage Levi's 517, a little too light, then dyed and airbrushed them to match.

The wedding dress was made again. The original, by the American designer Narciso Rodriguez, was a bias-cut slip dress of pearl-white silk crepe. New York's B&J Fabrics, where the silk had been bought, had kept a yellowed swatch. It led Rudy Mance to the original mill in Italy.

"We got the original fabric from Italy, and in the exact color," he said. Anna Light, a dressmaker in Philadelphia, made the new dress over several fittings, to get the bias cut right.

Manolo Blahnik lent shoes from its archive, the same style Carolyn wore. The company that had produced her original veil and sheer gloves made them again.

"The way that it hung was part of the beauty of it," Rudy Mance said of the dress. His aim, he said, was "getting it right and making sure I was paying my respects to them in the most proper way."

American composer Bryce Dessner wrote the music.

Release/Reception

The series opened on FX and FX on Hulu on 12 February 2026, with three episodes. The rest followed weekly until the finale on 26 March 2026. Outside the United States, it streamed on Disney+.

It became FX's most-watched limited series on Hulu and Disney+. By April 2026, viewers had streamed it for more than sixty-five million hours. In the month after the premiere, online searches for the couple rose by more than nine thousand percent.

Most critics were won over by the two leads. Many compared the series to The Crown (TV series, 2016–2023), another story of a family crushed by public attention.

Nicholas Quah, writing for Vulture, found that "Carolyn is the closest thing the show has to a genuinely inhabited character." Other critics felt the series told them little that was new about the couple.

Not everyone in the story welcomed it. John's nephew, Jack Schlossberg, criticized the producers for not consulting the family. In a guest essay for The New York Times, Daryl Hannah called her portrayal untrue. "But a real, living person is not a narrative device," she wrote.

At the 2026 Emmy Awards, the series received six nominations, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Sarah Pidgeon was nominated for Lead Actress, Constance Zimmer for Supporting Actress, and Rudy Mance for Period Costumes, for the episode "The Wedding."

It won one Emmy, for casting, shared by Courtney Bright, Nicole Daniels and Jennifer Brooks. Paul Anthony Kelly was not nominated, and Sarah Pidgeon said she had hoped he would be.

Carolyn Bessette never gave an interview. Twenty-seven years after her death, an actress gave her a voice, with only eighteen seconds of the real one to go on, and a wedding dress cut from the same Italian silk.
