A successful popular jazz musician C.K. Dexter-Haven(Bing Crosby) is divorced from wealthy Newport, Rhode Island socialite Tracy Samantha Lord(Grace Kelly) is now engaged to socially prominent and snobbish George Kittredge(John Lund). As Dexter tries to win back Tracy, a third man shows up in her life to complicate the situation: a reporter from Spy, a fictional tabloid newspaper, Mike Connor(Frank Sinatra), comes to cover the nuptials. Thus Tracy has to choose from three very different men during a course of self-discovery.
