Biography
Mary Elizabeth Donaldson was born in Hobart, Tasmania, on 5 February 1972, the youngest of four children of John Dalgleish Donaldson, a professor of mathematics descended from Scotland's Clan Donald, and Henrietta Clark Horne, an executive assistant to the vice-chancellor of the University of Tasmania.
During her childhood she studied music, playing piano, flute, clarinet, and was also involved in sports like basketball and hockey.
Mary studied commerce and law at the University of Tasmania from 1990 to 1994, graduating in 1994, and began her career in advertising, first in Melbourne with DDB Needham and Mojo Partners, then in Edinburgh with Rapp Collins Worldwide.

Her mother died in November 1997, following complications from heart surgery. Mary was twenty-five. She resigned from her job the following year and spent time traveling before eventually settling for a period back in Australia.
At the bar that night was a group of European royals in town for the Games, among them Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, his brother Prince Joachim, his cousin Prince Nikolaos of Greece, and, further down the same table, Prince Felipe of Spain(the future King Felipe VI of Spain).
Mary's friends had no idea who Frederik actually was until well after they'd all started talking.
What followed was a genuine long-distance courtship, conducted mostly by phone and letter, with Frederik making quiet, unpublicized visits to Australia whenever he could. A Danish magazine finally identified Mary publicly as his girlfriend in November 2001.

The following month, Mary made the relationship's less remote by moving to Europe herself, first to Paris, where she worked as an English tutor, and then to Copenhagen, where she took a job as a project consultant for Microsoft and began learning Danish at a local language school.
Queen Margrethe II gave her formal consent to the marriage in September 2003, and Frederik and Mary announced their engagement on 8 October that year. Mary's ring was an emerald-cut diamond flanked by two emerald-cut ruby baguettes.

They married on 14 May 2004, at Copenhagen Cathedral. Mary wore a gown by the Danish designer Uffe Frank and a veil that had already been worn, over the decades, by several earlier Danish princesses and by Queen Margrethe II herself;Mary remains the only person not born into the royal family ever to have worn it.

Her small bridal party included both of her sisters and an old friend from Australian radio. On the day of the wedding, the Danish Parliament granted her citizenship outright, in legislation still informally known as "Mary's Law," and she left Presbyterianism behind to join the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark.
Four children followed over the next several years: Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, and, in 2011, twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

Mary has been serving for years as patron of the Copenhagen Fashion Summit, as well as patron of Denmark's fashion industry.

She has posed and given interviews for both national and international fashion magazines such as Vogue Australia, Dansk, etc. She built a genuine, sustained reputation for style along the way, and was inducted into Vanity Fair's International Best-Dressed List Hall of Fame in 2016.

Her wardrobe has always moved comfortably between Danish labels, Malene Birger, Georg Jensen, and international ones, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Jean Paul Gaultier, without ever losing what stylists describe as an unmistakably Australian ease underneath it all.
The Australian designer Carla Zampatti dressed her for multiple magazine shoots before Zampatti's death in 2021, and Mary has continued championing Australian labels since becoming queen, including a habit, much noted in the press, of simply wearing the same well-loved dresses again on later trips rather than always debuting something new.

Queen Margrethe II abdicated on 14 January 2024. Frederik became King Frederik X, and Mary became queen.

Her father, John Donaldson, who had remarried the British novelist Susan Moody in 2001, died in Hobart in April 2026, at eighty-four. Mary became queen of a country nine thousand miles from the one she was born in, and a country that became her only home, after lost both of the parents.
