Iconic wedding dress: Mary Donaldson’s wedding dress on her wedding to Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark on 14 May 2004 designed by Uffe Frank

On 14 May 2004, Mary Elizabeth Donaldson was married to Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark in Copenhagen Cathedral in an ivory silk wedding dress designed by Danish designer Uffe Frank.
Mary Elizabeth Donaldson was born on 5 February 1972 in Tasmania, Australia, to Scottish parents.
In 2000 Mary met Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark at the Slip Inn, a pub in Sydney when the prince was visiting Australia during the 2000 Summer Olympics. The two started a remote relations since, and were engaged on 8 October 2003.
For her wedding, Mary wore a ivory silk duchess satin gown with scoop neckline and three quarter sleeves with open slit.
The fitting bodice is paired with a full skirt lined with 31 meters of tulle edged in French Chantilly lace underneath. The full skirt is overlayed with panels opening from her hip, revealing 8 meters of Irish heirloom lace in the folds.
The lace was part of the original wedding gift to Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden, Fredrik’s great-grandmother.

The veil worn by Mary Donaldson also belonged to Crown Princess Margaret. It was anchored with Mary’s wedding tiara, which she paired with earrings of diamonds set in platinum with South Sea Island pearls created by Marianne Dulong.

The back of Mary’s wedding gown featured a detachable train comprised of 23.5 meters of satin.

The wedding dress was designed by a Danish designer, Uffe Frank, and was sewn by Birgit Hallstein, a Danish seamstress.

On this special day, Mary paid homage to her mother (who passed away in 1997) in a very touching way. She had her mother’s wedding ring sewn in the bodice of her wedding gown, close to her heart.
And she did not forget her homeland Australia. Her bouquet, incorporating eucalyptus, roses and a sprig of myrtle, was sentimental tribute to her Australian root. After the wedding, she had the bouquet sent to Scotland to rest upon her mother’s grave.

After her marriage, Mary Elizabeth Donaldson became Crown Princess Mary of Denmark.
